How Long Does It Take To Get HIV Test Results? Complete 15-Minute Guide

If you are asking how long it takes to get HIV test results, the good news is it is faster than ever. Today you can get confidential results in 20 to 30 minutes with a rapid test, or in a few days if the sample goes to a laboratory (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2025a).

Types of HIV Tests and Result Times
According to CDC guidelines, there are four main FDA-approved test types (CDC, 2025a):

1. Nucleic Acid Test (NAT):
 Detects HIV viral RNA from a blood draw from a vein. Results take several days. Window period is 10-33 days.

2. Lab-Based Antigen/Antibody Test:
 Detects both p24 antigen and antibodies. Results take several days. Window period is 18-45 days.

3. Rapid Antigen/Antibody Test: 
Detects p24 antigen and antibodies from a finger-stick. Results in 30 minutes. Window period is 18-90 days (CDC, 2025a).

4. Rapid Antibody / Self-Test: 
Detects HIV antibodies from oral fluid or finger-stick blood. This is the test we use at Healthy Living Clinic in Goroka and what free clinics use in the US. You swab your gums or give a drop of blood, and your results are ready within 20 minutes (CDC, 2025b).

Understanding the Window Period
No test can detect HIV immediately after infection. This is called the window period. The CDC states that if you get a negative result after a recent exposure, you should retest after the window period for that specific test to confirm your status (CDC, 2025a). For example, antibody tests need 23-90 days to be accurate.

Is HIV Testing Really Confidential and Free?
Yes. Testing is available in health care settings, community-based organizations, and even at home through self-testing kits (HIV.gov, 2024).
In the United States, testing is protected by HIPAA privacy rules, and with health insurance, testing is usually covered as free preventive care. Free confidential testing is also available at CDC locations nationwide.

In Papua New Guinea, Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) is 100% free and confidential in all health facilities in every province — including provincial hospitals, district hospitals, and local health centres — as per the PNG National Department of Health policy, which aligns with WHO recommendations (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024).

The CDC recommends that everyone between ages 13-64 get tested at least once as part of routine medical care, and people with higher risk should test at least yearly (CDC, 2025a).
