HEART ATTACK: MYTH vs FACT - The Dangerous Cough CPR Myth That Can Kill You

Introduction

Heart attack- MYTH vs FACT.
On social media, you may have seen a post saying: "If you have a heart attack alone, cough hard to save yourself." This is called Cough CPR. It sounds easy and helpful, but it is NOT TRUE. It is a dangerous MYTH.

As a public health worker in Papua New Guinea with more than 10 years experience, I want to share the truth to keep our families safe. Knowing the right thing can save a life.

THE MYTH: Cough CPR Works at Home

The poster shows a man coughing and holding his chest. The myth says if you feel chest pain from a heart attack, you should cough forcefully again and again to restart your heart.

This is FALSE.

Coughing forcefully will NOT restart the heart. Chest pain is not fixed by coughing. A heart attack happens when blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked. Coughing cannot clear that blockage.

Worse, believing this myth delays real help. If you waste time coughing at home instead of calling for help, you lose precious minutes. Every minute counts during a heart attack. Delay can lead to death.

Doctors only use cough CPR in very rare cases inside a hospital, with machines monitoring the heart. It is NEVER for use at home alone. Do not try it.

THE FACT: Call Emergency, Sit Down, Rest, Wait for Help

The FACT side of the poster shows a woman sitting calmly and calling for help. This is the RIGHT thing to do.

If you or someone near you has signs of a heart attack - chest pain, pain in arm, neck or jaw, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, feeling dizzy - do this:

1. Call Emergency Right Away. In PNG, call 000 or St John Ambulance. In Australia, 000. In US, 911. In Lae, call your nearest hospital. Do not drive yourself. Call for ambulance.

2. Sit Down, Stay Calm.Do not walk around or do hard work. Sit on the floor or chair, rest your back. Try to stay calm.

3. Rest and Breathe Normally. Breathe slowly and normally. Loosen tight clothes.

4. Wait for Trained Help. Do not be alone if possible. Ask someone to stay with you. If you take aspirin and your doctor has told you it is safe, some doctors advise chewing one, but only if you are not allergic and emergency staff advise it.

Why This Matters for PNG

In Papua New Guinea, many people live far from hospitals. In villages like Ramu, Madang, or Morobe, we may not have quick ambulance. That is why we must act FAST and call for help immediately. Do not waste time with coughing myths or traditional treatments that delay hospital care.

Share this truth with your family. Especially teach our mothers, fathers, and elders who may believe Facebook myths.

Conclusion

Remember: Cough CPR does NOT work at home.

The truth that saves lives is simple: Call Emergency, Sit Down, Rest, Wait for Help.

Please share this blog to save a life. If this helped you, leave a comment.

God bless and stay heart-healthy.
