HIV Crisis Looming in PNG: 30 New Infections Every Day. PNG is facing a growing HIV crisis.

According to a diagnostic report from the National AIDS Council, HIV infections are rising fast after years of weakened prevention efforts and cuts to health authorities.

The Numbers Are Alarming

30 new infections now occur daily

- Mother-to-child transmission increased by 34%

General population infections up 130%

Sex work related infections up 300%

The report used a SWOT analysis and found that dismantling national prevention systems since 2014 is a key reason why the virus is spreading again.

Cardinal Sir John Ribat called for immediate action when presenting the review on July 30.

> “We should again declare war on HIV/AIDS in PNG and this simply means sparing no prevention effort and silence cannot be an option,” he said.

National AIDS Council Chairman Wep Kanawi also warned that global funding cuts have hit PNG hard. He said past government inaction and staff reductions directly contributed to the current spike.

> “Because government has not provided helping in the form of staffing for our organisation and money to help our organisation continue to do prevention work, over the past 14 years, the graph has spiraled out of control and this tells a story,” Kanawi said.

The Council says K271 million invested in HIV and AIDS management annually could protect over K271 million in economic losses in PNG.

A Call for Restructured Response
The National AIDS Council hopes the findings will push for better coordination, restored funding, and stronger government action. Their goal: bring national HIV transmission rates down from 1.7% back to 0.3%.

Good News in WHP: Better Screening for Women
While the national picture is tough, there’s progress in Western Highlands Province.

Women and girls in WHP now have better access to cervical cancer screening, treatment, and HPV vaccination through a joint PNG-Australia program.

The program includes:
1. Regular screening and treatment for women 30-49
2. HPV vaccinations for girls 9-14
3. GeneXpert testing technology - results in under 1 hour at Mt Hagen Hospital
4. Community health guidance on cervical cancer

Australian Ambassador Ewen McDonald and Ambassador for Gender Equality Michelle O’Byrne visited Mt Hagen Hospital on July 29 to see the program firsthand.

> “Western Highlands is showing rural populations across all four districts of the province, two specially fitted outback trucks purchased with Australian government funding doing screening and vaccination directly to local communities,” O’Byrne said.

Partners include the Minderoo Foundation, University of Sydney, Kirby Institute, and University of New South Wales. The Australian government has supported cervical cancer prevention in PNG for over 10 years.

What This Means For Us.
The message is clear: we cannot be silent.

As Cardinal Ribat said: “When no one is talking about HIV anymore, it is you and I, the church, we have to take it up. Because we are closer to our people, we have to bring this home to them.”

Prevention, testing, and community education must start again — in our homes, churches, and communities.
